A court clerk or other government office says they’ll fax you a document. You don’t need a fax machine for that. A free temporary fax number from StillFaxing.com can take the fax in your browser.
Ask the office first
Call before you get a number. Some court offices only fax to attorneys or parties on file. Many charge a per-page fee, and records offices often want a signed request. Ask when it’ll go out, since clerks often fax in a batch later in the day.
A faxed copy often can’t be certified. If a judge or another office needs one with a seal, ask the clerk how to get it. Some courts offer them online. Others mail them or have you pick them up.
Get a free number when they’re ready
A free StillFaxing.com number lasts 4 hours and needs only an email. How to receive a fax online has more detail.
- Enter your email on the StillFaxing.com home page and press Get my number.
- Open the email we send you and press Get my number. The link works for 30 minutes.
- When the office is ready to send, press Start my number. Your 4 hours begin then.
- Give the number to the clerk and have them read it back. Ask them not to save it to your file.
- Keep the number’s page open. The fax shows up there, and we email you a link to the PDF.
Disposable email addresses and VPN or proxy connections are refused.
If the office is running late
If the clerk says it’ll be tomorrow, add 24 hours for $1.99 or 7 days for $4.99 from your number’s page before time runs out. You keep the same number. Or get a new free number when they’re ready and ask them to delete the old one.
Check the pages and keep the PDF
The cover sheet usually gives a page count, which may include the cover. If pages are missing, ask them to resend. Do the same if our email says the transmission didn’t finish.
Download the PDF right away, because files are deleted 7 days after they arrive. Name it with the date and any case number, and keep a backup.
Anyone with your number’s link can see its faxes. Treat the link like a password and don’t forward the email. Faxes are encrypted shortly after they arrive.
Send a signed form back
If the clerk takes returns by fax, send from your number’s page. Upload a PDF, PNG or JPEG of the signed pages, enter their fax number and press Send fax. Free numbers send 2 faxes, up to 20 pages in total.
Your fax goes out from your number with a StillFaxing.com cover page, so replies come back to your number while it’s active.
When to skip the fax
Many offices will email a scanned copy, and some courts let you download filings online. A number can’t be kept for good, so if you’ll need faxes from the same office for months, ask about those options instead.
